Getting Ready

The day started at about 8:00am for me. I stayed the night at my grandmother’s house with two of my bridesmaids and our hair stylist & makeup artist, Mary Elizabeth Long, arrived early that morning to start on everyone. This was hands down the best decision I made about the day, having someone come to us. We all sat around sipping on coffee in PJs while Mary Elizabeth worked her magic.

I was really excited that Mary Elizabeth was able to securely incorporate a family heirloom into my hair. For my wedding my mother gave me my great grandmother’s diamond pin that she herself wore on her wedding day in 1921.

One of my bridesmaids, Dena, has a tattoo on her back that we originally thought about covering up (it’s a fairy in her au natural state). But, Mary Elizabeth came up with a much better idea, and painted some clothes on her.

Around 1:00 our photographer, Josh Reeder, along with his wife/assistant, Annie, came over. They roamed around the house and got some great shots. They even caught grandpa during his mid afternoon nap.

Once everyone was wrapped up with hair and makeup my bridesmaids and I had a seat on the patio so I could give them their gifts. Each girl got a card and a diamond pendant. We realized pretty quickly that it was a bad idea to do this after makeup.

Around this point, things started to get a little crazy. And by “a little” I mean we reached defcon 9. It had been raining on and off all day long, which meant not only was I freaking out that we’d have to do the ceremony under the reception tent instead of in the front of the mansion, but that we’d have to transport all the dresses and get dressed at the venue.

Time had gotten away from us a little so the next hour or so is a complete blur. We ended up arriving late, and due to the rain setup was complete choas. Our venue (Spring Haven Mansion) hadn’t allowed any vendors to arrive prior to 3:00 (for a 5:00 wedding). By the time I got there the valet was starting to setup, family members and wedding party members were all over the place assisting with setup, and I had to rush straight to the bridal suite to avoid getting my hair wet and start getting into my dress.

A Session of Sushi Wednesday, May 20 2009

This past weekend we had a great wedding for Laine & Pete Barnett. I will be featuring a lot of pics from their reception later on this week.

One of the items on the menu was a sushi station. Being a sushi addict I called on my good friend Chou who is an expert in the field. I left the difficult pieces to her and I created some simple tasty sushi.

Nori Stacks

So the Nori Stacks are something neat that I saw in Martha Stewarts Hors D’ Oeuvres Book several years ago. They are a great conversation piece and taste just as great as any sushi roll. Basically, it is stacked sushi that’s it!

Making the rice for the sushi takes just as much time as the rolling, cutting, and forming. We meticulously made the sushi rice, washing, seasoning, and even cooling it with a large hand held fan.

Thank you so much Chou for coming and spending the day at my shop. Cant wait to share all of the pics and how beautiful the display came out of our lovely sushi.

I’m going to tie each pair together with raffia and put them in a cute basket with a sign that says “For Dancing”.
